Enable file access

Chrome extensions can't read local files by default. Turn this on once, and Markdown Companion can open any .md file on your computer.

  1. Install Markdown Companion from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open chrome://extensions in a new tab.
  3. Find Markdown Companion and click "Details".
  4. Turn on "Allow access to file URLs".
  5. Open any .md file from your computer — it now opens in the reader.

Troubleshooting

  • The file doesn't render. Check that "Allow access to file URLs" is turned on (steps above).
  • Changes to the file don't appear. Save the file again from your editor — the reader reloads automatically once it detects the change.
  • Diagrams or math don't show. Confirm the fenced code block or math delimiters in the file match standard Mermaid or KaTeX syntax.
